What Is Early Intervention?
Early intervention speech and language support helps babies and toddlers develop communication skills. Communication includes understanding language, using gestures, making sounds, saying words, and expressing needs. Therapy can begin before your child starts talking and build on the ways they already communicate.
How Early Intervention Can Support Communication and Play
Play-based therapy can help children practice communication, interaction, and participation in ways that feel natural and engaging. Activities may include taking turns, making choices, requesting help, or communicating during familiar routines. Your therapist can also suggest simple ways to support these skills throughout your family’s day.
What Happens During an Early Intervention Evaluation?
You’ll share your child’s developmental history, your concerns, and what communication looks like at home. The evaluation may include play-based observation, caregiver questions, and age-appropriate activities. The clinician will explain the findings and discuss recommendations with you.
Frequently Asked Questions About Early Intervention Speech and Language Support
-
You don’t need to wait if you’re concerned. Difficulty understanding familiar language or communicating needs is a reason to request an evaluation. A pediatrician or pediatric therapist can help you understand whether additional support may be useful.
-
No. Learning more than one language does not cause a speech or language delay. Keep communicating in the languages you’re most comfortable using. Tell the evaluator which languages your child hears and uses so the evaluation can consider their communication across languages.
-
For children under 3, services through Early Intervention Colorado start with a referral to the program. You can make that referral yourself. The program determines eligibility and coordinates services, so booking a consultation with our practice is separate from enrolling in the state program.
